Web watchdog criticised for 'unaccountability'

NEWS The UK government's online watchdog, the Internet Watch Foundation (IWF), must become more accountable. This is according to leading privacy group, Cyber-Rights & Cyber-Liberties, which warned the IWF could become a "self-appointed judge" for Internet content unless action was taken to curb its powers. According to Yaman Akdeniz, director of the group, the IWF must be subjected to standards of constitutionality and have a greater regard to legal standards. "We are very much concerned about unaccountable organisations judging the suitability or illegality of Internet content without due process," Akdeniz said in a statement. "The country may witness the beginning of a new privatised cyber-censorship culture," he added. Cyber-Rights & Cyber-Liberties made its criticism in a written submission to the House of Lords Select Committee on European ecommerce last week.
