RIP passes second reading in House of Lords

By John Oates, 26 May 2000 09:00

NEWS The Regulation of Investigatory Powers Bill (RIP) has completed its second reading in the House of Lords. A committee debate will now take place in front of the whole of the house on the 12 June. This will involve a line-by-line reading of the Bill where lords are able to table amendments. Any amendments then have to be agreed by the Commons. The RIP bill aims to set out a framework for the monitoring of electronic information, but has been criticised for invading privacy and putting a burden on industry.
