NEWS Microsoft last night filed its final submission of evidence to US courts in a last-ditch attempt to fend off being split into two companies. The US Department of Justice (DoJ), last week reiterated its proposal to break up the company to boost competition in the software industry. However, in a violent rebuke, the software giant claimed this would harm the US economy. In an "order of proof", Microsoft called the DoJ's stance "extreme and unjustified", and said the proposed final judgement was "defective in numerous respects, making the document vague and ambiguous". Alongside the main rebuttal, Microsoft submitted a list of potential witnesses - including the CEOs of Compaq, Dreamworks and JD Edwards - who the company claims will support the anti-divestiture position. Judge Penfield Jackson is due to reach a final verdict imminently.
