NEWS Up to 850,000 UK healthcare professionals could receive free WAP phones in a project that hopes to give instant web access to the medical sector. The project, a joint venture between online medical news service HealthMedia.net and Carphone Warehouse, hopes to deliver a 24 hour news and information service to all healthcare professionals in the UK. According to Tony Fitzpatrick, chief executive of HealthMedia.net, healthcare professionals are not making the most of the internet as many do not have home access to a PC. He told silicon.com the changing nature of healthcare, the high level of travel and home visits involved, and the need for interdisciplinary communication made mobile internet and email access a neccessity for health workers. On the first day of the project 130,000 healthcare workers had applied for free WAP phones, although all 850,000 registered workers are entitled to receive one. Healthcare professionals can register for their free phone through their association or by registering with the HealthMedia.net website.
