Air traffic privatisation plans grounded by the Lords

The government's bid to privatise the UK's air traffic control system, NATS, was narrowly defeated in the House of Lords last night.

NEWS This is the second time the Lords have rejected the sell-off of NATS, this one coming just days before the Transport Bill is due to be included in the Queen's speech. The government wants to raise £1bn for technology improvement to NATS by selling the system off to a public-private partnership. Bill Semple, MD of NATS, hopes the proposed privatised company would become a supplier of air traffic control technology to the developing world. Labour plans to put forward an amendment that will reinstate the sell-off in time for the Queen's speech on 6 December.
