NEWS The Computer Users' Association has labelled the withdrawal of the software, planned for this year, as a serious threat to the support of the AS/400 minicomputer series. It claims legacy applications will stop working once the new versions of the support software are introduced and businesses will have to re-write their document management applications. Speaking to silicon.com, Steven Way, chairman of the AS/400 user group, berated IBM for withdrawing such a widely used piece of software at too short a notice.

He said: "It's a bit much to give marching orders to a piece of software which is widely used by many businesses. Removing support will force people to migrate to other platforms." Office Vision supports the AS/400, which is an IBM minicomputer series introduced in 1988, that runs under the OS/400 operating system. IBM's minicomputer series is used primarily for business applications, most of which are written in RPG III and Cobol. IBM was unavailable for a comment.
