Online money management: Don't bank on it

Online banks are consistently failing customers and some of the worst culprits are denying access to one in five users, according to a report from new web performance company Site Confidence.

NEWS Sainsbury's bank performed worst in the week-long survey of five leading online banks, with just 80.5 per cent availability. Ten per cent of logins took over one minute to download. Marbles did not perform much better, offering only 82.9 per cent availability over the week - the equivalent of being closed for two months a year. Online bank leader Egg offered 88.1 per cent availability - equivalent to 43 days downtime throughout the year. "Top management would not tolerate that performance in a bank branch, so customers shouldn't tolerate it online. All it takes to fix it is some money and intelligence," said Site Confidence IT director David Singleton. Top performers were Cahoot and Barclays iBank, whose sites were available 98.8 per cent and 97 per cent of the time respectively.
