UK voters shut out of polls by lack of online democracy

The UK government is neglecting thousands of potential voters in the UK by failing to have a secure online voting system in place for this summer's election.

NEWS An online survey by Forrester Research called eVoting: Toward a UK Internet Democracy? found that 20 per cent of the UK voting public would like to vote over the Internet in a general election or local election. It also found that a quarter of the respondents were unable to vote in the last election and many of them cited the inconvenient location of polling stations, being too busy or working too late as the reason - all factors that would be overcome if an online system was available. Forrester concluded that an online voting system would "encourage a higher overall turnout" as well as help to reduce administration costs. However, it adds that public confidence in the security of the internet as well as universal access would need to be improved to maximise the benefits.
