COMMENT Some cynics dismissed this as mere fashion-following that Blair would never follow through. And they were right. The results of our email survey of MPs shows that only 38 per cent were capable of answering a simple email query from a constituent. Most humiliating for the government was the appearance of e-minister Patricia Hewitt on the sheet of shame. We're still waiting for her reply. Only 36 per cent of Labour Party MPs managed to reply at all. Most government IT projects are notable failures. But what chance do they have if their own party's MPs cannot manage this most basic of technical tasks? Even the Tories, not noted for their enthusiastic support of technology, managed a higher average. Even John Major managed a reasonable response. Email provides a way for constituents to communicate with their Parliamentary representatives in a radically different way. Or it does if your MP can be bothered to reply. If my mum can use email my MP should be able to do so too.
