NEWS IT directors are dedicating nearly one day a week to trying to keep up with changing technology and management practices, according to a survey published this week. The study, by CIO magazine, found IT professionals spend an average of 7.2 hours a week on training and learning. However, over a quarter of respondents admitted spending between one and a half and two days a week on training. Current hot topics include ecommerce, management/leadership, communication and customer relationship management. Other findings revealed CIOs value conversations with their peers as the most important source of information. Industry publications and websites came second while advice from consultants and resellers came third. Speaking to silicon.com, Brendan Major, head of information services at the NSPCC, said the study paints a realistic picture, but, unprompted, he emphasised the importance of online news services. "Online news sites have increasingly replaced the use of bespoke IT consultancy services, such as Forrester, Gartner and IDC as information is quickly available and often has links to further topics," he said. The survey questioned 200 CIOs and CTOs - 47 per cent of them from companies with turnover of $100m or more.
