NEWS Lord Gus Macdonald has been appointed minister responsible for IT in the Cabinet Office. Macdonald replaces Ian McCartney as minister for the Cabinet Office and Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, reporting directly to the Prime Minister on the reform of public services, regulatory changes and the progress being made in e-government. The former transport minister will officially be number two to John Prescott in the Cabinet Office, but is likely to be given plenty of space to act on his own. Macdonald, the former head of Scottish Television, was given a peerage by Blair who was impressed by his business credentials.
