Tories slam 'jobs for the boys' as Ofcom role is prepared for Smith

Labour MP sounded out over 'independent' watchdog role...

By Will Sturgeon, 20 August 2001 07:21

NEWS Former culture secretary Chris Smith is in line to become the first chairman of communications regulator Ofcom. Although the selection process for the position at the head of the new body is not set to begin until next year, Smith is thought to be among the favourites for the position, and according to the Financial Times he has already been approached about the job. Smith's candidacy is already raising objections, with the Conservatives slamming the notion of appointing the former cabinet minister and MP for Islington South to the supposedly independent body. Ofcom will take on the responsibilities of existing regulators the ITC and Oftel as well as other media watchdogs.
