Death by data: Politician plots ultimate revenge

Gordon Brown in for a long week...

NEWS Treasury staff are being forced to sift through thousands of email records after a Liberal Democrat MP used the Data Protection Act (DPA) to get his own back. Fed up with being fobbed off by Gordon Brown's staff, Liberal Democrat economics spokesman Matthew Taylor has used the DPA to request copies of all information held about him by the Treasury and other government departments. According to the Financial Times, Taylor has asked for all documents and emails about him produced during the last year - including the election period. The disgruntled MP hopes to show the extent of political bias from supposedly neutral civil servants. Under the DPA, government departments have six weeks to respond to the request. Although paper records are exempt from the law until October, Treasury officials have promised all records will be handed over.
