NEWS Smartcard technology is a key component of controversial new measures for the handling of asylum seekers in the UK announced today. Asylum seekers will be required to carry an ID smartcard that will contain personal details - such as a photograph and fingerprint - as well as acting as a cash card to replace the current voucher system. The implementation of the smartcard technology will allow a closer monitoring during all stages of the asylum process - from arrival to accommodation or deportation. The new system for processing asylum seekers will cost £250m and will begin to be rolled out in January 2002.
