Oftel tightens security guidelines

Watchdog watches closer...

By Heather McLean, 10 December 2001 17:40

NEWS Oftel has published a revised edition of its guidelines for telco operators to aid the prevention of security breaches when networks are damaged by incidents such as floods and hack attacks. Although operators already have licence obligations to keep an eye on the security and cohesiveness of their networks, Oftel has upped the ante on Condition 20 of the license. Condition 20 states an operator must take all reasonable and practical steps to ensure the safety of the network. The watchdog organisation will use the new guidelines as a benchmark in cases where the integrity of a network is bashed, to see if an operator has towed the line. The guidelines are published on the Oftel website and are open to comment until 11 March 2002 when the copy will be finalised.
