NEWS Internet voting in Britain could be an option by the next election, according to plans unveiled by Leader of the House of Commons Robin Cook today. In an interview with the Guardian the ex-Foreign Secretary said he viewed the internet as the key to engaging with younger voters who are increasingly not bothering to vote. The turnout at the last election was the worst on record at 59 per cent. Cook expressed an intention to get the system underway as soon as possible, but admitted enabling voting for the next general election would be a "tough call". He also made it clear that trials of internet voting are being held at local elections this spring, but that there are real questions of security to be overcome.
