NEWS The EU Council of Telecoms Ministers have given the green light for the creation of a dot-eu top-level domain name. The nod from telco ministers clears the final obstacle for the two-year project to get a Europe-wide domain name able to compete with the US-focused .com domain. In a statement, Information Society Commissioner Erkki Liikanen said the move means that for the first time EU internet users could have pan-European domain names and addresses. It now remains for the European Commission to implement the policy by selecting a private, non-profit organisation to manage the .eu domain, and defining rules governing potential issues such as cyber squatting.
