NEWS Open standards will control the future of online voting in the UK. In his April 2002 report to the Prime Minister, e-envoy Andrew Pinder said the UK is set to be the first country to take on a standard for global online election systems. Anwar Choudhury, director of technology strategy for the Cabinet Office, first unveiled the government's backing of the standard in March. Development of the standard is in the hands of Oasis (Organisation for Structured Information Standards), an international consortium that focuses on open XML-based technology development. Oasis has completed the first version of the standard which will be used in e-voting trials that will be conducted by local authorities this May.
