NEWS BT's plans to operate the UK's first public wireless local areas networks (WLANs) should help it secure a top position in all the country's prime real estate, claims Richard Dineen, in his latest Ovum View column for silicon.com (http://www.silicon.com/a52810 ). BT plans to launch the network in June this year at 20 WLAN hotspots. The company claimed it will have 400 sites operational by 2003, increasing to as many as 4,000 by 2005. Advanced negotiations are already underway between BT and owners of key airports, the Costa Coffee chain, railway stations, hotels and Welcome Break motorway services.
