NEWS The UK government today tried to play down reports that 800,000 civil service jobs will be put at risk by the introduction of electronic government. A Cabinet Office spokeswoman said the introduction of e-government would mean a shifting of job roles, but not necessarily redundancies. She said: "It is inevitable in any business that as IT is adopted the staffing needs will change, but this doesn't necessarily mean less people will be needed. "Once electronic service delivery is in place there will be a need to move staff around." The story, reported in the Sunday Times yesterday, quoted e-envoy Andrew Pinder as saying e-government could take 20 per cent off the cost of government staffing within 10 years. The Cabinet Office spokeswoman today said the comments, made informally to the Sunday Times journalist some time ago, were taken out of context. The government plans to double the cash for NHS IT, but where will the money go?
