NEWS Bolton Metropolitan Borough Council is the latest public sector institution to board the IT outsourcing bandwagon, signing a £13m seven-year deal with Fujitsu Services. The Japanese infrastructure management firm will run the council's desktop, server and mid-range infrastructure in addition to email, network support, internet access, applications and helpdesks used by the council staff. The local authority's assorted IT divisions will be consolidated by Fujitsu, and will be delivered out of the town hall by a combination of Fujitsu and council staff. The new IT division will also be charged with delivering the e-government infrastructure and support service transformation. Apart from the cost-cutting incentive, the council also said it hopes that the new outsourcing deal will improve services, with Fujitsu's involvement leading to improved efficiency as a result of less downtime and a faster response to tech queries.
