NEWS British Airways' IT staff are anxiously awaiting an expected announcement of between 3,000 and 5,000 job cuts on Wednesday.

The plans will form part of a new cost-cutting drive at the airline that aims to save £300m during the next two years.

BA has already cut 13,000 jobs under its Future Shape and Size programme, which was implemented following the terrorist attacks in the US in September 2001.

Reports indicate that the latest round of job losses will be targeted at support staff and BA's Waterside headquarters near Heathrow, and that they will involve a combination of voluntary redundancies, some staff going part-time and natural attrition.

A BA spokesman declined to comment on the details of the cuts before the formal announcement on Wednesday.

BA's information management (IM) operations employ about 1,900 staff and the airline's CIO Paul Coby has already achieved IT cost savings of just under £100m in two years during the first round of cost-cutting.

The Amicus union, which represents some BA staff, told silicon.com it had been consulted by the airline, although it was unable to reveal details about where the losses would be.
