NEWS The £3bn Morrisons takeover of supermarket chain Safeway has claimed its first IT victim, with the Safeway CIO set to leave the organisation.

Morrisons only officially took control of the rival chain earlier this month, promising a quick integration, and the first high-profile casualty is Safeway CIO Ric Francis, who will leave the organisation this week.

Speaking to silicon.com today, Francis would only confirm that he was leaving Safeway and would now spend a few months concentrating on his hosted email start-up venture Virtual eMail before thinking about any future CIO positions.

A Morrisons spokeswoman confirmed the move but said that it is still too early in the integration process for any decisions on the future of IT staff on both sides of the organisation.

"There is a consultation period going on at the moment and there is obviously a lot of uncertainty with jobs," she said.

Both supermarket chains run IBM in the back-office but some of the key decisions to be made around the IT integration will involve the future of some of Safeway's more leading-edge projects, such as RFID.
