Leader: UK IT staff – give yourselves a big pat on the back

You're a hard working bunchÂ…

UK IT directors are the most hard-working in Europe, with many working over 60 hours a week, according to new research today.

One of the problems is that UK IT staff suffer from the double whammy of working in a profession notorious for its long hours and stress, along with working in the country which generally has the longest working hours in Europe.

Couple that with the budget cutbacks and job losses of the last few years, throw in a loss of faith in the IT department in many boardrooms after the bubble burst and it's been a tough old time.

But in all that, it is often overlooked what a great job UK IT departments, IT directors and CIOs do and as the economy shows tentative signs of a recovery – in the UK at least – firms will once again be looking to these people to introduce the technologies that will give them a competitive advantage.

Let's not forget that technology will continue to be a key differentiator for many companies in competitive sectors and that's where the hard work of UK staff adds value – just remember to take a break now and again and pat yourselves on the back.
