NEWS The government is to offer £50m in grants for research and development around technology innovation that benefits businesses, the environment and society.

Science minister Lord Sainsbury this week announced £50m in funding that will initially be made available from a £150m pot set aside for the next three years. "I am calling upon businesses to work with research bodies to put forward projects for funding that could make a real difference to our economy," he said in a statement.

Some of the areas eligible for grants include technologies to support environmentally-friendly transport; inter-enterprise computing; renewable technologies; disruptive technologies in electronics and displays; sensor and control systems.

"These represent emerging technologies that have wide and pervasive applications in business, and achieve environmental and social benefits," said Lord Sainsbury.

Grants of between 25 and 75 per cent will be made available for collaborative projects and 100 per cent funding for proposals that help develop "dynamic knowledge transfer networks". Applications can be made online through the DTI website.
