Update: Barclays Easter glitch due to hardware failure... not clocks

Even the computers had the weekend off...

NEWS A Barclays computer glitch left the bank's customers without the use of its ATM machines and online banking for much of the Easter bank holiday weekend. All services are only today returning to normal according to some customers.

The problem struck at 01:00(BST) on Sunday morning, around the time the clocks went forward, leading many to believe the computer glitch, to which the problems were attributed, was related to a problem with the clock settings.

However, Barclays today told silicon.com that earlier media reports suggesting the change to British Summer Time was responsible were wide of the mark.

A spokeswoman for the bank also dismissed suggestions that the culprit had been a manager who set the clocks back rather than forward.

"It was an issue with a small piece of our IT hardware," said the spokeswoman. She added the bank is currently investigating exactly what went wrong with the kit, which was not named.

Around 1,500 cash machines in the south of England went offline and stayed offline until around 17:00(BST) on Sunday evening.

Some customers are calling for compensation and the bank says it will listen to all complaints.

"We're asking any customers who experience any financial loss as a result of this problem to contact us and we will address them on a case-by-case basis," said the spokeswoman.

After customers were left without cash by Barclays Bank over the Easter,i was also afected again on Tuesday the 29/03/05 i was stuck in the supermarket with my trolley full of shopping trying to pay with my card and was told the card wasn't working in fact they had orders to take my card from me, the lady was kind enough to let me try the cash point, as i did that, my card was taken by the machine.
Embarrassingly i had to tell the lady i couldn't pay for my shopping and had to walk away with everyone staring at me,.it was rather embarrassing.
I went to the bank and to find out that there was no reason at all why that happened, no one could tell me why, Clearly they don't care about customers the service is incompetent .
The way they treat customers it is ruthless and uncaring, like has been said before.
Now since Thursday i have not been hable to use Internet banking services, again i don `t know why because i need to pay bills, and will now be charged more on my credit cards because i haven `t been hable to log on into my online banking and pay my bill on time.
