Vodafone has announced its current chairman is to step down next year.

Lord Ian MacLaurin, who has held the post of chairman since July 1998, will officially step down at the operator's AGM in July of next year.

MacLaurin will continue to be involved in the company as head of the Vodafone Group Foundation, a charitable trust connected to Vodafone, and remain as an adviser to the company.

Sir John Bond will take up the position vacated by MacLaurin in 2006. Bond, who is a non-executive director at Vodafone, is better known for his role as HSBC's group chairman.
