silicon.com has been named as online business publication of the year at the annual Work Foundation media awards in London this week.
The Work Foundation (formerly the Industrial Society) WorkWorld awards, sponsored by Amec, celebrate excellence in print, broadcast and online journalism on subjects of work, business, management and economics.
silicon.com was nominated for three pieces of content, which included our ID Cards on Trial campaign, a special report on how Las Vegas casinos are using high-tech methods to catch gambling cheats, and an In Focus analysis piece on the future of chip and PIN technology.
The award was presented in front of a packed audience by the BBC's former political editor Andrew Marr and was collected on behalf of the silicon.com editorial team by chief reporter Andy McCue and business editor Steve Ranger.
The judges praised silicon.com's journalism and said: "One of this website's greatest strengths is that it sticks to its knitting. It clearly understands its users and delivers the information they need. This website and its content represents a neat and perfect example of the way the internet should be used, showing a great range of delivery media."
Other winners on the night included Dow Jones, the Economist, the Financial Times, BBC Radio 4's Today programme, The Money Programme and BBC Two's Newsnight.
Will Sturgeon, managing editor at silicon.com, said: "This is a great win for silicon.com and an excellent endorsement of the work we do and the content we produce for the site.
"Identifying our audience and creating a sense of community is at the heart of what silicon.com is about, so for the judges to recognise that and single it out as the reason we've won this award is fantastic."
This is the second award silicon.com has won in less than six months, following on from our reporter Jo Best being named as female technology writer of the year at the BlackBerry Women and Technology awards in October 2005.
