JJB Sports is upgrading its stores with new electronic point of sale (Epos) technology and management tools.

The sports retailer has hired BT Expedite to replace its ageing Epos system with a new package - including customer ordering and stock look-up modules - to give it better visibility of its in-store inventory.

BT said the system will be rolled out across 430 stores and shoppers will see improvements "within months".

BT Expedite will take on first line support and hardware maintenance for the system.

The rollout also features BT's Enterprise Management Suite store estate management tool for monitoring devices, plus its Virtual View and Learn package for in-store learning.

JJB Sports associate director of IT services Mark Macaulay explained that the company's existing system had been in operation for many years - and could not be adapted to take advantage of many features that are standard on newer systems.

He said because BT is also managing some of the infrastructure, JJB Sports is free to focus on developing its core retail business.
