Glitch takes Sainsbury's shopping offline

"Thousands" affected

Supermarket chain Sainsbury's has taken its groceries website offline after it developed a fault with online ordering.

The company froze the section of its main site on Tuesday afternoon, after discovering that orders for next-day delivery were not being processed.

The site takes about 90,000 orders per week and the number of customers affected is said to be in the "low thousands".

A Sainsbury's spokeswoman said: "Our team are working extremely hard to identify the problem and ensure that the site is fully operational again.

"We are calling the affected customers to let them know and are offering them a £10 e-voucher for when the site is back online."

The company praised its online operation in its first quarter trading statement, released on Wednesday.

It said: "The online operation is continuing to perform well, with sales growth at over 40 per cent."

    I was expecting my order this afternoon
    guess I won't be getting it.

    But I'm still waiting for Sainsbury's to phone me and let me know what the score is.
