Online betting exchange Betfair has appointed a new CTO.

Tony McAlister will join the company as chief technical officer from mobile content management company Motricity.

Betfair's former CTO Rorie Devine left the business earlier this year after five years with the company.

Since Devine's departure, the CTO responsibilities have been shared between his two direct reports - one looking after infrastructure, the other overseeing development work.

McAlister will take up his new role from 19 January.

Betfair CEO David Yu, himself a former CTO of the company, described McAlister as "experienced and capable".

"I have no doubt that he is the right person to lead our technology strategy, innovation and delivery into the next chapter of our corporate development," he said in a statement.
