Web buying: Brits' office romance

At work? Or doing a little web shopping? According to new research, there's a good chance you could be both.

A report from market researchers comScore has found more than a third of money spent on internet purchases in the UK comes from shoppers at work.

Those shopping at the office are also more likely to actually make a purchase than those at home, the research found, with work-shoppers accounting for 25 per cent of visits to web retailers but 35 per cent of money spent.

Mike Read, SVP and managing director, comScore Europe, puts the disparity down to a difference in shopping behaviours at the two locations - work-shoppers are concentrated on making their purchases, whereas home-shoppers tend to be more interested in browsing as well as buying.

"We often see that people have very different browsing patterns between the two locations, having a tendency to be task-oriented and transaction-minded at work and more leisurely when browsing at home," he said in a statement.

Amazon was the most visited internet retailer in the UK, comScore said, getting nearly 50 million visits during May alone. Apple came second, drawing around 27 million visitors.

One quarter of visits to Amazon came from consumers at work, compared to just 13 per cent at Apple.
