2009 may not be over yet but analysts have already revealed the top 10 strategic techs that CIOs should be looking at next year.
According to Gartner, the 10 strategic technologies will have an impact on the enterprise over the next three years, with IT chiefs encouraged to make decisions on them within the next two.
The technologies are dubbed strategic either because they may need a large investment from companies; there's an associated risk in not investing; or because they carry with them the potential to disrupt IT or the business.

The top 10 strategic technologies for 2010
Cloud computing
A technology which also made Gartner's list for 2009, the advent of cloud computing could help cut costs and will also see enterprise IT departments acting as cloud providers themselves, by providing services to customers and partners.
Green IT
Another staple from last year's list, IT can help businesses facilitate their green initiatives companywide, such as by providing analytics to help enterprises identify where they can cut their carbon.
Virtualisation for availability
No stranger to Gartner's strategic lists, virtualisation - however, this time the analyst identifies live migration as a key technology for CIOs to have their eye on.
Client computing
As virtualisation advances and the choice of hardware and OS becomes less important, CIOs need to develop a five- to eight-year plan around client computing, says Gartner.
Advanced analytics
Rather than just providing information to the business, CIOs will now need to provide simulation, prediction, optimisation and other analytics to help businesses make better decisions.
Reshaping the datacentre
Rather than building a datacentre designed to cope with a business' growth in 20 years, enterprises would be better off adopting a pod-based approach - design the site to support what will be needed over its lifetime, but only actually build what's needed for the next five to seven years.
Security-activity monitoring
CIOs will need to look into the range of security monitoring and analysis tools on the market that help enterprises detect suspicious activities in order to help protect their companies and keep them up to speed with audit requirements.
Flash memory
According to Gartner, flash memory is becoming more important in the storage world and has an impact in areas such as embedded IT systems.
Mobile apps
As high-end mobiles continue to see high adoption rates, the associated apps and app stores will become of increasing strategic importance.
Social computing
There's no doubt enterprise users already have an appetite for social media, so CIOs need to be on top of how it's used in the business.

Didn’t I plan for all these last year? Come to think of it I planned for them the year before as well. I guess the old adage is running true:- 'ain’t nothing new under the sun'
So instead of wasting time planning anew, I’ll just resubmit last years proposals, after some judicious use of 'Find and replace' and sit 2010 out.
