The European Commission is to fork out €1.2bn on ICT research this year.

The EC cash bonanza will be spent on a number of tech projects as part of its seventh framework programme (FP7) which will run until 2013. According to the Commission, ICT is the largest budget item under FP7.

The EC is now calling for research projects to apply for a slice of the funding. All proposals must be submitted by 8 May this year.

The renewed call for proposals comes as 2,000 research scientists convened yesterday at Cologne at an EC research information day, designed to give scientists insight into how best to approach their pitches and to form research groups.

The Commission also said that later this year it will be backing joint technology initiatives (JTIs), whereby public and private organisations will team up on ICT projects. The JTIs, likely to be proposed by the EC this spring, will focus on areas including embedded systems.
