The NHS CIO is to step down at the end of April, just months after taking the post.

Matthew Swindells was acting as interim boss of the £12.4bn National Programme for IT (NPfIT) following the departure of NHS IT director general, Richard Granger, at the beginning of the year.

The Department of Health (DoH) confirmed Swindells - who has been working for the department for three and a half years - is moving out of the public sector to work for Tribal Group, a consultancy to the public sector.

The department is currently in the process of recruiting a director-general-level CIO to act as a full time replacement for Granger.

The new recruit will lead development and delivery of the overall tech strategy for both the health and social care systems.

Hospital Pass for any replacement that dares to take on this position.

Although I dare say a suitably large golden hello might tempt someone

Lets hope that we get someone with the respect of the market, who understands the sensitivity and the complexity of the domain and who can balance professionalism with humanity!

There have been too many patches of blight in this programme. Lets get some (more) useful 'fit for purpose' deliverables that help the clinicians and managers up the sharp end.
