The contract is part of a move for the council, which serves more than 130,000 citizens, to adopt more flexible working.

Council staff will now be allowed to work from home in an attempt to improve services out in the field.

In a statement, St Albans District Council's head of IT Mutairu Jibril, said: "The council is committed to delivering a first-class service for staff and citizens by adopting innovative practices and intelligent approaches to our work. [This contract] will deliver radical customer service improvements that make a real difference to the lives of St Albans citizens. This new service is a stepping stone for transforming the way the council works."
