North Wales Police has turned to US outsourcer Unisys to maintain and run its email system.
Email accounts of 1,600 police officers and 900 support staff will be migrated from Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2007.
The three-year contract will see Unisys remotely manage the system and build in the ability to recover data in the event of a catastrophic loss.

Geoff Bradley, information management director at North Wales Police, said in a statement: "Our officers are increasingly using BlackBerry devices to access line-of-business applications and email in the field, so we need to know we can rely on an effective and fully operational system around the clock."
The system was previously run in-house and Bradley said the move would free up the IT department to concentrate on testing new technologies to improve the effectiveness of front line officers.
