The biggest European Union IT systems will soon be overseen by a new body.
Under a legislative package adopted this week, an agency will be set up to control the management of the Schengen Information System; Visa Information System; Eurodac and other large-scale IT systems in the area of freedom, security and justice.
The agency will be charged with making sure there are no service interruptions to the systems, maintaining security and data protection standards, as well as looking after reporting, statistics, research, and training.
The agency is expected to go live in 2012 and, in the future, could also be put in charge of developing other European Union IT systems.
