Google's VP of engineering Adam Bosworth reckons that in the old days developing software was akin to "state socialism" where engineers would go off for years and come back with a grand plan that didn't suit anyone. These days, he says, smart developers are taking an evolutionary approach.

"Most educated people know that evolution is not about grand design it's just a reality of the environment. Software is evolving in the same way its not about intelligent design its about intelligent reaction. It's not a science it’s a living breathing way to react to your customers," he said, speaking at the saleforce.com conference in San Francisco.
