Accenture has completed the handover of the NHS IT systems it was running to CSC, following its decision to pull out of two big contracts that formed part of Connecting for Heath (CfH), the giant NHS IT upgrade programme.

Back in November, Accenture decided to terminate the £2bn worth of contracts it was working on to deliver new patient and GP systems.

Accenture had been awarded two contracts to act as the local service provider for the programme in the East and North East regions back in 2003.

NHS CfH has revealed that the existing "core services" previously provided by Accenture in the East and North East of England were transferred on 8 January.

The NHS said that on the same day contracts were signed between CSC and the Department of Health for the delivery of "new and improved" IT services for the NHS in the East and North East, together with the restatement of the contract to provide those services in the North West and West Midlands.

Accenture retains responsibility for delivering the Picture Archiving and Communication digital X-ray systems to the NHS.
