Originally signed in 1996, the deal involves the provision of managed IP network services to 125,000 public sector employees within 90 UK government agencies, including criminal justice, education and health services.

The extension of the contract brings with it new developments in IP telephony hosting and mobile working.

According to a spokesman for Global Crossing, the service underpins drives for efficiencies and cost cutting across all government agencies, through the adoption of IP voice and data networking.

Although Global Crossing's partner in delivering the service, Siemens Enterprise Communications, has hailed the move as one of the government's few IT successes, The OGC was tight-lipped about the benefits it will get out of the deal.

A spokesman said: "This contract is an important component in our ability to maintain the provision of managed telecoms services."
