Council pilots "one-stop-shop" road watch

Hampshire County Council is trialling an extension to its road management systems with an asset-counting application based on video capture.

The council is piloting the Yotta DCL MARCHpms pavement management system to process video data on its road systems. According to Paul Davison, senior officer in Hampshire's highway and transport team, the system can be used to assess the state of the council's roadside inventory.

It can identify road furniture, such as signage, street lighting, road markings bus lanes and speed cameras and can be integrated with existing asset management systems to provide performance benchmarks on road maintenance to the statutory standard required by central government.

Davison said: "It's a good one-stop-shop for knowing the condition of the road network."

Hampshire will trial the system for one year, starting this month. The cost of the trial is expected to be up to £20,000 for the first year of operation, including consultancy fees from Yotta DCL.
