Hospitals get remote access to patient records

The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust has implemented a secure remote network to improve clinicians' access to cancer patient records.

The project, which will cost £60,000 in the first year, has initially been set up to provide staff at the newly opened Sir William Rous Unit at Kingston Hospital with patient data stored at The Royal Marsden Hospital through a secure web-based remote access system based on a Citrix environment and provided by Centralis.

The system was completed in May with an initial user base of 30 and aims to roll out to another 100 users in the next three years.

The Royal Marsden Hospital director of ICT Jon Reed told silicon.com he hoped to use the system to provide home access to up to 50 clinicians by the end of the year.

He said: "We've been able to create a remote environment that enables clinicians to have access to the applications they require but at the same time enforce the highest level of security for confidential patient records."
