Too High Too Low

Canadian-born Rimer originally made waves as an investment banker in Silicon Valley during the intensive start-up activity a decade ago and is now a successful venture capitalist based in the UK.

He has invested heavily in big name start-ups such as Skype, online TV service Joost and social music site Last.fm.

He is also a big advocate of open source; he invested in MySQL as a start-up and currently has interests in SourceLabs, a Seattle-based company that acts as a bridge between open-source projects and big companies.

Due to his success so far, he is seen as someone who could influence the agenda of other venture capitalists looking to invest in technology companies. One panellist described Rimer as being head and shoulders above any other venture capitalist in Europe.

The importance of venture capital was stressed by another panel member who said the most dynamic companies are now being fuelled by investment from venture capitalists.
