Why? Keeping eBay and PayPal at the top

Too High Too Low

As CEO of eBay since 1998, Whitman has overseen the development of the auction site into one of the world's biggest online brands despite fierce competition from Amazon.com's Jeff Bezos.

Whitman has also made sure eBay continues to innovate so it can remain at the top of the pile. A prime example of this is the recent introduction of an SMS service to alert would-be buyers when they have been outbid on the auction site.

Whitman is an expert in brand building and consumer technology. She has made sure problems are fixed quickly - such as weeding out fraudsters and fake sellers - and delivered consistent profits.

Whitman also heads up PayPal - which eBay acquired in 2002 - and the Agenda Setters panel singled her out as a being major factor in making the online payment company such a success.

One panellist commented that with Whitman at the helm, PayPal has become the de facto standard for online payment.
