As the guiding light behind Infosys, a $4bn IT services company that provides the computing backbone for the world's largest banks and businesses, S Gopalakrishnan stands out from the rest of the Indian tech crowd.

Infosys' influence continues to grow, with analysts Gartner predicting the company's revenue will overtake the US IT services giants of HP and IBM by 2011.

The Agenda Setters judges praised Gopalakrishnan for creating an international player from a home-grown Indian business and for boosting Infosys' reputation in comparison to its rivals.

Gopalakrishnan, known to his colleagues as Kris, now has a key role to play in maintaining those enviable margins in the face of a rising rupee exchange rate, high inflation in India and a worldwide economic slowdown.

If Gopalakrishnan can see off these challenges and win over customers as Infosys pushes into new markets in the Middle East and Latin America, then HP and IBM should indeed worry.
