Sverre Jarp's place on the Agenda Setters list was sealed by his involvement with the most audacious scientific experiment in history.

As chief technology officer at Cern he plays a key role at the lab behind the 'Big Bang' experiment to collide protons at 99 per cent the speed of light in order to learn the secrets of matter - the launch of which grabbed the world's attention.

The Agenda Setters judges were unable to resist the exotic nature of the project saying they chose Jarp "for making it all interesting".

Closer to everyday IT, Cern is also a developer of grid computing technology and boasts an impressive history which includes the birth of the web and much basic internet technology.

Jarp has been in the Cern IT department since 1974, working his way up through a series of roles to become CTO in 2002.

Under his leadership, the judges agreed, the research centre will no doubt continue to bring innovation and mind-bending discoveries to the wider tech industry.
