No. 23 Ian Foster, academic and grid computing guru

Last year's position: 28
Praised for shunning the ivory tower and getting his hands dirty in industry, Ian Foster represents the growing conviction that grid computing is where tech's headed.
With a joint appointment at the University of Chicago and Argonne National Laboratory, Foster shares the lessons learned from academia with the major web services players - the Oracles, IBMs and the HPs - to create an environment where grid computing can flourish.
As grid heats up, so has Foster - he's now sitting pretty five spots higher than last year. As one panellist put it: "Anyone who's working on grid is automatically setting an agenda."
