No. 47 David Sainsbury, Lord and grocer

Last year's position: Not placed
An interesting addition to the list, Sainsbury is UK parliamentary under-secretary of state for science and innovation and a rarity among his peers, in that he brings a modicum of tech-savvy to the dusty corridors of power in the House of Lords.
He famously presided over a debate on spam in which other peers spoke, with no hint of irony, as their concerns over why the House was speaking about tinned meat.
He is also chairman of supermarket chain J Sainsbury.
