Agenda Setters 2005

Sergey Brin and Larry Page
Sergey Brin and Larry Page

No. 12 Sergey Brin and Larry Page, co-founders and presidents, Google

Last year's position: Not placed

The Google boys, the pair that founded the company, didn't get a look in last year's Agenda Setters. Our judges seemingly decided it's CEO Eric Schmidt who calls the shots.

But back they come, ranking above Brin's 24th place finish in 2003 but not his number 8 spot in 2002, albeit then as company CTO and both times to the detriment of Page.

This time around, even with the Google vote split - something that tends to happen only at household names, Apple and Microsoft being other examples - and their boss taking away the ultimate accolade, our panel deemed them influential enough to cast additional votes this way.

For one thing, they should satisfy our longevity criterion. Whether over what should be long and rich (definitely rich) careers, they can come up with Agenda-Setting goods again remains to be seen. For now, 'search and beyond' and a great media profile get them in the top dozen.

Agenda Setters Past

Take a walk down memory lane - and find out who made the Agenda Setters poll over the years:

QUOTATION

"China clearly has many dimensions and many are setting an agenda. It's at the political level, it's at the investment level, it's at the contract manufacturing level and it's at the software level - it's all over."
--Peter Rowell, Regent Associates executive chairman and Agenda Setters panellist
